I have always wanted a system that is able to keep tabs on the things that I like to do and keep me updated when they happen. Rather than needing 14 apps and an overwhelming amount of push notifications I want to have an agent that knows my interests and informs me about upcoming things I am interested in.\nThe nature of being able to throw things at the wall with a Claw typed agent was very appealing for this kind of task.\nThe goal of this project was to have the agent be able to find and notify me about these different things:\nMusic artists that are releasing or have released a recent album\nComedians performing locally in my area\nSports teams that are playing tonight\nI would give the agent the subset of artists, comedians, and teams I am interested in and it would go out and keep tabs on all of them an update me as needed.\nThen if I was interested in the event the agent would add them to my calendar as a reminder.\nMain issue # Security\nI jumped on OpenClaw pretty early on and there was very little security or auditing built in. The Claw was a black box that did as it pleased and you had almost no idea what it was doing.\nI had faced a similar challenge with Claude Code. Sandboxing was the approach I used there to add some security. Claude Code improved quickly and added Tool Hooks, where I could log the pre and post-tool hooks to identify if things were going amiss. Here OpenClaw had none of them.\nI will caveat that they did move quickly and the security of the Claw\u0026rsquo;s has greatly improved within a few months. However this comes with the detriment that the Agent isn\u0026rsquo;t very useful without unconstrained access. I\u0026rsquo;ll talk about this more later.\nGaining visibility # Similar to my setup for Claude Code, my Claw was placed into a VM on a separate VLAN on my network that was restricted from talking to my internal devices. My concerns shifted to getting insights into the tool calls and web traffic. There is some auditing for tool calls within the WebGUI dashboard that OpenClaw provides. Web Searches/Browsing was going to be an issue.\nI searched online and within the OpenClaw Discord but no one seemed to have a great solution yet.\nTo solve this I spun up a Squid web-proxy so I could MITM the traffic to gain visibility into what the Claw was reaching out to on the network.\nThe thought was not to prevent attacks, but have an audit trail to determine what might have caused them.\nThe standard squid package in Ubuntu repositories does not allow you to configure TLS interception. The OpenClaw config easily took and respected the environment variables HTTP_PROXY/HTTPS_PROXY.\nenv: { shellEnv: { enabled: false, }, vars: { HTTPS_PROXY: \u0026#39;http://10.100.0.27:8000\u0026#39; NO_PROXY: \u0026#39;discord.com,gateway.discord.gg,openrouter.ai,api.search.brave.com\u0026#39;, }, }, From here I was able to shut off almost all direct internet traffic via firewall rules. Discord doesn\u0026rsquo;t like being proxied and OpenRouter fought with me somewhat so they were allowed. With this I now had visibility and could tail the access.log while the Claw was operating in order to see where it was going.\nModel Choice # Tokens are not cheap. I run a local llama3.2 model on my GPU and although it can do tool calls, I found it to be way too slow and lacking in intelligence to get anything done. In order to justify my desire to purchase a larger offline rig I wanted test out GPT-OSS 120B. This is a way more capable model that I have used before and is available in OpenRouter. The other benefit of OSS is its absurdly cheap compared to SOTA models.\nModel Issues # I took a few weeks off working on this project and by the time I came back sandboxing was added to OpenClaw along with some restrictions that prevented weaker models from operating without a sandbox.\nThe sandbox wasn\u0026rsquo;t appealing for the following reasons:\nThe VM I am running on is already limited in resources that the extra overhead of a container is not worth it.\nScripts with dependencies would have needed to get installed on every run.\nI wanted the ability to make network connections to my calendar which is also restricted within the Claw sandbox.\nI am already in a VM so a sandbox is duplicative.\nBuilding images might have been able to solve some of my issues but figuring this all out was not worth my time or sanity.\nThe way to enable smaller models to run without a sandbox isn\u0026rsquo;t very intuitive.\nThe JSON config and the docs don\u0026rsquo;t really tell you which settings you need to disable and without digging into the source code I had to resort to trial and error until OpenClaw allowed me to run with scissors again.\nagents: { defaults: { model: { primary: \u0026#39;openrouter/openai/gpt-oss-120b\u0026#39;, }, models: { \u0026#39;openrouter/auto\u0026#39;: { alias: \u0026#39;OpenRouter\u0026#39;, }, \u0026#39;openrouter/openai/gpt-oss-120b\u0026#39;: {}, }, sandbox: { ## THIS LINE DISABLES THE SANDBOX FOR WEAK AGENTS, USE AT YOUR OWN RISK mode: \u0026#39;off\u0026#39;, workspaceAccess: \u0026#39;rw\u0026#39;, scope: \u0026#39;session\u0026#39;, docker: { network: \u0026#39;bridge\u0026#39;, binds: [], }, }, }, }, This is all probably intentional. The benefit these restrictions have for protecting less skilled users unaware of the risks running outweighs the frustration people like me have in figuring out how to disable the guardrails. I don\u0026rsquo;t disagree with making this difficult to disable. The other issue that I have found with AI products is that any information online is almost irrelevant within a week or two so finding someone else struggling with this was difficult.\nHow did the model do for assistant tasks? # OSS-120B handled a majority of the simple tasks I gave it.\nWeather # My first test was for it to create a Cron job in the mornings to fetch the weather for my local area and report this in Discord. This worked OK, but for some reason the Discord skill requires the explicit channel ID to post in it which was frustrating to figure out what I was missing.\nThis was simple and didn\u0026rsquo;t need a skill for repeated runs.\nSports Events # I created Skills for fetching sports events as those are repeatable processes that didn\u0026rsquo;t have a built in Skill. These seem to run fine as the information is abundant on the Internet. The Claw has browser access and also has a Brave Search API key so it didn\u0026rsquo;t struggle at all with this task providing updated and accurate information.\nArtist release finder # This is where things got difficult. Sadly open APIs for music data are becoming rare. And having the Claw burn through my free Brave Search API requests was not going to be a solution.\nI used to use the Spotify API heavily for this as it was very easy to setup and they have a massive amount of data for artists.\nHowever Spotify just recently closed their API off to only premium subscribers. https://developer.spotify.com/blog/2026-02-06-update-on-developer-access-and-platform-security\nThey have been getting some pushback on this but I decided to use a differnet API.\nMusicbrainz.org currently provides a free API that allows up to 300 requests per second which is way more than I need.\nSince this isn\u0026rsquo;t a simple process to query the API, I decided to just have the agent write a script for this. The script grabs artists from a JSON file and queries them one by one with a one second delay. It then outputs upcoming releases to a releases file. Another script is run that checks the releases file and determines if it alerted to Discord about them already, by referencing a cache file.\nThis is all run by an actual cron job as the AI isn\u0026rsquo;t needed in this process at all. I used a Discord webhook to send upcoming album release information.\n0 8 * * 2,5 /usr/bin/python3 /home/claw/.openclaw/workspace/music/music_agent_v3.py \u0026amp;\u0026amp; /usr/bin/python3 /home/claw/.openclaw/workspace/music/notify_new_releases_v2.py I was struggling with getting Cron to work in the Claw and this seemed to work best. I also found that the Discord bot permissions let it see messages sent via the webhook so I could reference them to get an upcoming album added to my calendar via the Agent.\nComedians # This is where the Claw struggled the most. How do you find authoritative information on comedians that have a relatively small following? They occasionally have links to random Google Calendars or listings on a random site they use to sell tickets on. This information is sometimes hard for me as a human to track down and takes me a few minutes. It seems like weaker AI models struggle finding information that is not abundant and needs to be accurate.\nOSS could not handle the complexity here. I tried using a subagent to save on context and giving it a list of local comedy clubs and their calendars. I had very mixed success with this where some would get spotted but others I knew about would not. I tried having it confirm the findings with web searches, but again this information is hard to find even on a search engine.\n## GOALS You are a sub‑agent tasked with checking whether the comedians below will perform in the \u0026lt;Location\u0026gt; area. **Data sources (in priority order)** 1. **Venue calendars** – scrape all months/years on each site. 2. **Web search** – run a targeted search (`\u0026lt;Comedian\u0026gt; Comedy Club \u0026lt;Location\u0026gt;`) to supplement missing dates. **Procedure** - Loop over the month dropdown on each venue calendar, click “Go”, and harvest every event row (date, title, venue). - Record any match for a listed comedian. - If a comedian has no entry from the calendars, run a web_search for that name + venue and add any found tickets/articles. - Keep calendar results even if the web search returns none; only add extra sources when they exist. - Create a table of the upcoming performances and post them to the general discord channel - Make sure you check todays date so you know which performances are upcoming and which have passed. **Venues** - Punch Up (non‑local): https://punchup.live/ ### List of Comedians - Comedian Here I tried using 5.4-nano for this since the token cost isn\u0026rsquo;t that high. I had more success, but even then it had a hard time pulling together disparate information from a large amount of sources.\nThis likely can be done with a smarter model and a more refined skill with a various venues and resources, but I was not able to easily acheive it here with a local model which was my goal.\nCalendar # I have a Radicale container that hosts a WebDAV calendar. I had the Claw write a python script in order to add events to the calendar. It struggled a bit with the module as its not widely known and I had to configure auth on my own with a config file. After this though I was able to make a skill that the Claw uses to run the python script with correct parameters to add events to my calendar. I then sync this to my phone so all I have to do is ask the Claw in my Discord channel to add the above or something to my calendar. This works best and was the basis of my effort, so I am happy this is at least working.\nOverall Thoughts on Assistants Running on Smaller Models # Although it is very achievable, running a smaller model with a Claw greatly reduces it\u0026rsquo;s appeal. It is no longer an agent where you can throw something over the wall and have it figure things out. You need to put in a good amount of effort and guide it in order to make it useful to you.\nBecause of this I struggled deciding when to just create an actual script for a task and run it via cron since I am already doing most of the work giving the AI this information. There are some tasks like the Artist tracker where this makes sense. Creating a skill to query the Music API could have worked but the script was faster to create and should be more deterministic in the long run. A task like the comedian tracker is more beneficial to have a model. As there is no central API for this information and you will have to get it from unknown sources.\nAs local models improve I think my second attempt might be better. For now I am OK just using this as a way to use natural language to add things to my calendar.\nSome of the benefits of having the Claw and giving it a shell in a sandbox aren\u0026rsquo;t really used in my tasks. I am just running python, using the browser, search API, and applying patches. If this was more of a coding agent and solving problems in an enterprise environment it might have provided more of a benefit.\nI did try using PicoClaw and it has far less security restrictions, but it performed about the same on my Comedian task which confirmed to me that it is a model limitation rather than the agent orchestration framework.\nThings are changing fast so its likely I can see improvements in a few months when a new powerful local model is released.\nUntil then I will hold off on buying an H200 and just use the agent as a way to add to my calendar.\n","date":"3 April 2026","externalUrl":null,"permalink":"/posts/claw-assistant-attempt-1/","section":"Posts","summary":"","title":"Using OpenClaw as an Assistant","type":"posts"},{"content":"I find myself constantly swapping monitors I am using on my laptop and without a desktop environment like KDE or GNOME it can be hard to get the correct monitors setup. I wrote a simple script to automatically set my monitor arrangement depending on the active monitors but its not good when dynamically adding monitors. Instead of learning how to use xrandr better I opted for the hard solution of reinventing the wheel.\narandr is a really good app that has a GUI for managing monitors. It works by basically giving you a gui to move your monitors around and then translates that to xrandr commands.\nAfter writing all my code I see how hard it is to write something to manage monitors. But I wanted to try and improve upon it and add some features in the future that I was looking for.\nphantasmfour/brandr Manage Monitors, Trying to Improve on Arandr Rust 0 0 I wanted to start learning Rust since I hear about it a lot and my favorite way to learn is by jumping into the fire.\nI still don\u0026rsquo;t have a great grasp on everything in Rust after this and still struggle with ownership of variables as its new to me and I have never even written code where I needed to manage memory at all so this was never a concern.\nI tried having ChatGPT help a lot with the code but I found its Rust knowledge lacking compared to Python. It as well struggled with ownership and would end up repeating things over and over that were wrong.\nThe data is was trained on also must have been really old as it constantly references old versions of modules and deprecated ways of doing things.\nIts still helpful for assistance as I am new to rust but I had to learn and do a good amount on my own. I think it was a healthy balance but definitely slowed me down. Without the language barrier I think I would have accomplished more of my goals that I initially set out with.\nCoding # I started out needing to find a gui module that was simple to code with. egui claims it is this and in my experience was very easy to work with. The only thing that was new to me was trying to space things accordingly. The only comparison I have is working with Swift and that is way easier to add padding and place things where you want them dynamically. This might be a skill issue, or not what this gui module is intended for, but either way the issue is shown in the code.\nThe one killer feature that brandr has that I don\u0026rsquo;t think I have seen any other Monitor Manager application have is showing what\u0026rsquo;s on the monitors that are currently enabled. Yes most apps just have the Identify button that will pop up to show you which monitors are which but that honestly doesn\u0026rsquo;t look nice and I think this way is a bit cleaner.\nAfter using screenshots though depending what\u0026rsquo;s on your screen it can be hard to tell as things are scaled down. But I am still surprised no OS\u0026rsquo;es ship with such a feature(if Apple\u0026rsquo;s AI reads this I expect the feature in less than a year). Its a very cool feature and I had to do some engineering around it to get it working.\nTaking 30 screenshots per second on both monitors and rendering them to the screen makes the app unusable. I settled on taking a screenshot every 5 seconds as I figured it was a good balance. I also did not want to thread taking these screenshots as I couldn\u0026rsquo;t figure out Rust threading. I had a fun idea to just stop taking any screenshots when you are moving a monitor so that it does not try to render the texture while you are moving it causing a lag.\nI used the scrap library to screenshot and it was pretty useful. It expects the display objects within loops though and this gave me a lot of trouble of figuring out how to pass these. But this whole function became the only module I seperated out in the whole script so that was good to learn.\nThe next difficult thing I had to figure out was how to have a bounding box and to render the monitors inside it. The bounding box was easy to make and GPT was able to help me with that. But centering the monitors in the box was a challenge. I ended up writing some fun math that basically is calculating out the total monitors you have, the width of those monitors, and starting the first monitor offset to that so everyone stays centered. You are really only concerned with the X placement as you can just force all the monitors at the same height somewhere off the midpoint.\nIf I could redo anything about this it would be this part. The dynamic nature of rendering these monitors is hard. And I wanted to improve on arandr in that it does not show disabled monitors. That\u0026rsquo;s probably a good thing but when I often plug in a new monitor I would like to see it within my Monitor Manager.\nImprovements # The app right now is usable and is at a very basic state for what I wanted. It is not perfect.\nSome of the improvements I want to do would be:\nSaved Display Preferences Snapping monitors together when you move them Dynamic resizing of the whole gui Detection when monitors changed via udev rules The last one was one of the things I wanted to add. I wanted to have a udev rule setup to detect when monitors are plugged in so the app would auto launch with the options for the new monitor. I think that would be very helpful for my workflow to speed things up and I think its something most OS\u0026rsquo;es don\u0026rsquo;t give you when you plug a monitor in and they try to just assume what you want. They do a very good job but this is Linux and I want full control over everything.\nLessons Learned # Rust is pretty cool. Glad I got to start learning it as its all I hear about.\nDynamic gui management is very hard. This probably takes way more time than I had for this project and might even require a different library that takes this into account better.\nComplex solutions to complex problems are OK, but trying to debug what goes wrong with them is increasingly hard and you need to focus and map things out to do this efficiently. This is something I struggle with and still need to find better ways to manage these situations.\n","date":"11 November 2024","externalUrl":null,"permalink":"/posts/brandr/","section":"Posts","summary":"","title":"brandr","type":"posts"},{"content":"A longer project that I have been working on that took around a few months to build out.\nphantasmfour/mixtape_app Music Player App Dart 0 0 Why Build This? # Two things I was looking to accomplish with this:\nMusic app with no Ads and legal music See how ChatGPT4 codes with languages other than Python I have been a fan of Mixtapes since I was younger. They have died off a lot in popularity and it gets greyer and greyer about what is a free mixtape and what is commercial. DatPiff also recently shut their app down so I was looking for an alternative with no ads but sadly that does not exist.\nLike everyone I have been playing with ChatGPT and I tried out the code interpreter to do some data analytics and was very impressed with what it was able to do. Since I had a GPT4 subscription I decided it would be good to get some other use out of it and this app has been on my list for a while.\nI am not going to dive specifically into the coding that I did since its a large project. I am going to give a rough timeline and the largest issues I ran into.\nFirst Few Weeks # My first few weeks was me reintroducing myself into Flutter. I wanted to make the app available in a Web Browser, Android and iOS. I also write most of my code in Linux and XCode sadly is only for Apple devices. And with the state of Mac Virtualization is kind of non-existent for App development on newer versions of iOS.\nFlutter is great and GPT4 was able to start working with it very easily. It pointed me to just_audio which is the core library of the project.\nThe very first screen we worked on was the Album List Screen\nOriginally this was all written around json files that we loaded in from the webserver. That pointed to the images and the songs within the Albums\nIn order to generate those json files I had GPT write a few scripts to take the mp3 files within folders and put this info into a json file.\nThis is where I hit my first issue.\nMetadata # I don\u0026rsquo;t envy and company that relies on metadata included in files for any information. With Mixtapes depending on where you downloaded them from the metadata would be non-existent or lacking important features.\nIn order to populate the title, artist and song name I relied on the metadata within mp3 files.\nGPT wrote a quick script to run through each mp3 and extract the necessary metadata. If it was not there then it prompted me to fill it in which took a good amount of time.\nThis took a while to input all this metadata but it is well worth the trouble as you do it once and have it forever.\nAfter I was able to have all the metadata extracted I then put it into json files. I was then able to move onto the screen you see when you click an Album.\nI kept this really simple.\nThe hardest part of this was creating a custom navigation bar so that when you scroll the Album cover and back button go away. Without this the back button was in a navigation bar and my data was below it.\nAfter this is was the Now Playing Screen\nAgain kept it simple for the UI. But this is where things start getting more complicated.\nHLS Fun # When I was testing the first version of the app I had a large gap between when the first song ended and when the second would start since the next song did not start loading yet.\nWith just_audio you are given the ability to have multiple players. GPT gave me the idea to have an active player and a next song player which loads the next song and switches between the players once the song ends. Then you just repeat the process and the inactive player loads the next song.\nI needed to use provider to manage the state of the players and notify the UI widgets whenever the active player was switched to the next player as flutter does not seem to have a concept of global objects.\nUltimately this ended up causing more issues and I ended up reverting back to one player. What pushed me back to one player was in the end when I needed to use just_audio_background there is a limitation of only being able to use one player.\nI wanted to have a library that I could import and call upon whenever we needed to change the song or update the data on screen. GPT told me to name the file audio_service which I thought was a great name. But GPT was confused in doing this as audio_service is a legitimate library which the same guy(Ryan) that wrote all the just_audio modules. This also pushed me to switch back to one player as getting player status in your notification bar and lockscreen would have needed me to directly import audio_service and use players from there. This would have been a larger rewrite of a core process of the app and I decided against it.\nThis finally brings us to HLS. Since this app would ultimately be running on my iPhone I was forced into HLS as Apple does not support DASH. HLS is pretty cool though. just_audio also supported it very easily. GPT was able to write the code to use ffmpeg to create m3u8 and ts files from the existing mp3\u0026rsquo;s. Besides the time it took to create all the files on the initial run, HLS works great and basically eliminated my need to have multiple players. I was also surprised how easy it is to setup as you basically just create the files and host them somewhere and your done.\nThe only issue I ran into with HLS is just_audio does not support it for browsers so I had to write in a check within my audio_service to see if the client is on a Web browser and force only mp3\u0026rsquo;s to load.\nDatabase # With adding in HLS, wanting to support playlists, and to get away from the JSON files due to load times it was time to implement a database.\nThis was supposed to be a fairly quick project so I went the route of using Google Firebase. I am not super concerned of the privacy implications for this app and its one less thing I have to manage.\nGPT recommended Cloud Firestore and I remembered using it a few years back for one of my first forays with Flutter.\nYou can also do your authentication via it and leverage this to protect the database.\nWith Firestore as long as you have the apiKey and your database rules are setup poorly anyone can write to your database once they extract the api key from network traffic or the apk. In order to get around this you need to write good database ACLs. I kept mine simple as we only allow reads to the albums from users and the users playlists are only accessible with the matching UID\nservice cloud.firestore { match /databases/{database}/documents { match /albums/{document=**} { allow read: if true; // Allow anyone to read allow write: if request.auth != null \u0026amp;\u0026amp; request.auth.token.isServiceAccount == true; // Only allow the service account to write } match /users/{userId}/{document=**} { // Allow read and write only if the user\u0026#39;s UID matches the document\u0026#39;s name allow read, write: if request.auth != null \u0026amp;\u0026amp; request.auth.uid == userId; } } } I had GPT rewrite the scripts we used to load data into JSON into the Cloud Firestore database.\nOne thing Firestore does extremely well which I don\u0026rsquo;t fully understand it is caching. If you go offline most of your data is still there. There is not much information around the caching setup that I could find or knobs to tune.\nOne thing Firestore does extremely poor is querying. You search for exact matches via queries. When I was writing my search I had in mind just fuzzy matching but you cannot achieve this via Firestore.\nTo work around this I added a keywords field which tries to pull out some of the song info. Then when you search you are not searching for exact matches but keywords of song titles to try and achieve this fuzzy matching. It works best with Artist and Album names since those are easy to remember and provide an exact match.\nThe only other way to do it would have been to keep adding keywords of every possible combination of fuzzy matching for each song, album title, and artist. This most likely would have been too much data stored in the database, but it could have worked.\nAuthentication # This app is just a music player. I have no need for anyones email or any information about them. But email is a super convient way to just associate a user with an account to store their playlists so they can login on other devices and carry this data over. So I ended up supporting email accounts for this purpose.\nHowever we also have a Skip button. This just does anonymous authentication so you can just get in, play music, and use playlists. However if you do sign out you lose that playlist data since I can no longer associated you.\nI again made this super simple and I think Skip should be used as the main option as we don\u0026rsquo;t need any personal information like an email for the basic functionality of the app.\nI probably could have made the Skip button a lot bigger to emphasize my push to people using anonymous accounts but the option is still there.\nFinishing Touches # Playlists # Once we had authentication configured and the database setup we were able to start creating and storing playlist data. The setup for this is pretty simple and I copied over most of my code from song_list_screen.\nBasically playlists are just associated with the user and I am then just treating them like an Album with setting the player to the current queue of songs from the playlist.\nMini Player # All good music player apps will have a mini player once you start playing a song and leave the now playing screen.\nThere was no easy way to do this outside of building a MiniPlayer widget on every screen I wanted it to show on. I was able to house the code in its own module so its really just calling on the widget and forcing it to the bottom.\nI hit a small issue with the custom navigation bars on the song_list_screen which caused the mini player to cover the last song of your album. To get around this I just added some padding to the bottom if the mini player is loaded.\nDownloads # Downloads were pretty fun. I used the Dio library and just stored the songs on the users device. When you tap the download button you end up downloading the mp3 version of the song.\nEvery time you go to set the queue of the player it will check if the song has been downloaded locally and use the mp3 version on the device.\nIf you download the song after you already start playing another song in that album then we will not use that recently downloaded file. I setup a queue every time you press a song so if it was not downloaded then the queue will reference the web URL.\nTo build a good download button was a bit harder. I ended up needing to create a custom button. The way I went about this is probably not the best but when you click into an album or playlist I check every single song to see if it has a local file associated with it on your device. If so then show the music icon. If not the download icon. If you click the download button then show a loading icon until the song is downloaded.\nHow did GPT4 do? # GPT4 Code Interpreter was really helpful. I would say its greatest benefit was being able to write quick python scripts for managing the server side setup. It would write code in seconds that it would have taken me 10-30mins to get working.\nWith Flutter it was also very impressive. It was able to help write usable code. Some of it was dated as new modules are developed and things are deprecated.\nI also cannot judge how well it was doing since I am not that familiar with Flutter and have not used it for a few years.\nIt had some road bumps with the naming of the audio_service and suggesting things that just would not work.\nHowever it is good once you get a better understand of how to use it.\nIt struggled grasping the entire project as it got bigger and bigger. But if I gave it specific tasks to write a specific widget it still excelled but relied on me a bit more for implementation.\nError handling seemed to be hit or miss. With such a large project when it wrote in an error it sometimes would not be able to fix it on its own. Most of the time however the code produced did not have any errors.\nAsking it questions is great but at some point documentation just becomes easier when you are getting the wrong answers or not the best one. This is mostly a gripe when having it give me information on a specific package like just_audio. The documentation in this case is really good and I ended up referencing it more than asking GPT.\nCan you work with it to build you an entire app? Yea\nWould I have been able to do it without external documentation? Maybe\nIs it at the point where someone who does not know how to code to make an app? No\nIs it at the point where someone who does not know a specific programming language can still use it? Yes\nOverall its amazing and it significantly sped up the process of me coding this app and that is why I used it.\nWhat I have done in the past is just looked up YouTube tutorials of similar apps and basically reused code into mine.\nI think using GPT here is better than that and it allows you to ask questions about the code to get an even greater understanding.\nI would definitely use it again.\nI also think it has a lot of potential for the future when it keeps improving. They make it very easy to get started with Python modules and examples. The hardest part is going through all the voices.\nCoqui also has some paid features like using some of their better voices and cloning your own voice. Cloning a voice off limited audio is still very young in my opinion and was not very convincing. Their paid voices let you put emotion into the speech which would be very good for ingame characters or something different. However Coqui takes a lot more RAM and CPU Cycles then I expected.\nI am translating around 30mins of audio from the text. This takes around 2 hours to finish running with my CPUs almost maxed out on the Pi.\nThe Process # The breakdown of how the script runs is\nScrape the text from the article website Send the text to the Coqui functions to Synthesize Speech Use the Google Translate API to convert the text into your desired language Combine the output files into one large file with english and other language outputs intertwined. Upload the file to Discord for easy listening The scraping process just uses BS4 which is good at what it does and just needs to be adapted for whatever html you are scraping. I ended up using the html parser and get_text in order to get the best looking output. After that I filtered out any rouge characters and any lines I could find to remove. The article I am scraping has some Advertisements within so its hard to decern. But any text I know will almost always be there and I don\u0026rsquo;t want to hear is removed.\nCoqui handles all the text synthesis on its own and its mostly abstracted from the user. You pick which models and voices you like and it creates the Wav file for you. This runs a bit slow even on a modern PC so I decided to thread it to speed up this process.\nThere is a Python library that is able to use the Google Translate API to make free and unlimited translations. Its pretty well known but I had to fight to find the correct version that worked with the example code.\nCombining the files was a bit difficult since they are wav files. Basically I cut up the article into paragraphs/sentences that I feed to Coqui. This then outputs many files in both languages. I then wanted to hear the English version and then the second language. I also wanted these to flow so I created a half second blank audio file so they don\u0026rsquo;t start talking exactly after the last audio is done playing. I name the files with an index so we know the order of when they were created and then basically just run a loop to concatenate all the file names together. Working with raw wav files is hard to concatenate, but using the pydub library you can add audio files to a segment and then export it as an mp3.\nDiscord webhooks are the very useful and versatile. They are also easy to work with and you basically just send a post request with your data and it goes to your Discord channel. This is convenient for me to listen to on the go without self hosting.\nIssues # With any project there are issues.\nFile Size # My first issue I hit when still developing was Discord does not let you upload files over 25MBs. I wrote some quick and very hacky code to check if our audio file is \u0026gt;25MBs and if so split it in half. I don\u0026rsquo;t anticipate the files being \u0026gt;50MBs so this is safe for now.\nI then just submit two different post requests to upload the file. This can probably be done way more dynamically but it works.\nYou can also just upload files to your own site or hos them somewhere else.\nTime # Running this script on a good Pi 4 takes around 2 hours even maxing out the CPUs. I made use of threading to speed up this process to the 2 hour mark. This is still bad but I can live with it.\nI tried to get around this by using Piper . Piper gave me runtimes of around 10 minutes since its built for the Pi and was outputting lower quality audio. However the Spanish synthesis was glitchy and for every 1/30 words and it would get stuck just uttering gibberish. I did not love it and could not get around the problem by using other models. I also confirmed the text translation was correct it was indeed the model having issues. You can try your luck with other languages as the switch to using it in my code is a simple function change.\nBad Synthesis Example: Your browser does not support the audio element. Memory # When I originally needed to move the Piper it was because using Coqui on the Pi 4 caused the script to use all of my memory and the OS would kill it. I tried including the Garbage Collector collection function to run more frequently but I cannot find where the memory leak is. Or just bad use of memory. I don\u0026rsquo;t think I am holding onto any of these files but I could be. Or it could be within the Coqui library as that is the section where all my memory gets tied up.\nI slapped a band-aid over this problem by increase my swapfile to 10GBs.\nYes not a good solution but it works. I beleive Windows stores ldap hashes in NT hash so I at least feel better about doing it this way.\nMy config for some reason did not let me use user Filters at all. Why I cannot do this is confusing and caused some issues with my proxmox config. I ended up just having to import all users and since proxmox requires you to have bother users and groups imported it was not too big of a deal.\nOne thing I never got working was having openldap work as an authentication mechanism for SSH. I could not find a comprehensive guide of this working with openldap so if I figure it out I may add it.\nThere are a lot of fun things I did not explore with openldap. You can add in a gui component to manage everything. You can also store a lot of different things in ldap from what I am reading. I probably did not use it to its full potential but I did not need to work with the requests module so its good enough.\nThe first part using the proxmox API is authenticating. With Proxmoxer you are able to give it an IP and an API Token. You can very easily make an API session with their recommended prox = ProxmoxAPI('ip', user='@', token_name='\u0026lt;token_name\u0026gt;', token_value='\u0026lt;token_value\u0026gt;', verify_ssl=\u0026lt;True|False\u0026gt;, timeout=\u0026lt;timeout_in_seconds\u0026gt;)\nMaking an API user in Proxmox is simple via the gui. I first made a user and then I made an API Token for that user. Save off the api token since you only see that once. Your Token name should always be in the gui.\nI then had to give permissions to the user I created to actually be able to shutdown the VMs and the nodes. I ended up giving it these permissions\nThese privileges apply on the user. I gave VM.Audit to be able to check the VMs to make sure they are up. I kept getting asked for Sys.Audit in the beginning since I was checking node status. Its not overly permissive and I don\u0026rsquo;t want to try without it so its kept there. Privileges are explained here.\nI wrote a function that pulls all the vm\u0026rsquo;s on the node, then executes the Proxmox API call to shutdown all nodes. I then check all the vms on the node to see if they are still up and wait until they all go down. This is important because I want to shutdown the node next but don\u0026rsquo;t want to kill my VMs before they fully shutdown.\nThe next function I wrote shutdown the nodes. I had a bit of trouble finding an API command that worked on Proxmox 7 but this one ended up working without any 501 errors prox(f\u0026quot;nodes/{node}/status\u0026quot;).post(command=\u0026quot;shutdown\u0026quot;)\nThe next function I wrote was the WOL function and a ping function. The ping just checks to see if the host is up or down before I try sending a WOL. The WOL function sends a WOL if the host does not respond to ping and then waits 20 seconds and pings again. If the host is still not up I give it another 10 seconds and then run the loop again. Usually the host is up by the second time around.\nI wrote an argparse that checks if you want to startup the nodes or turn them off. I then have the script running via cron on a Pi that I never shutoff and draws way less power.\nThe hardest part about this whole setup was that my Pi is on a different VLAN than the Proxmox Nodes. I have a fortigate firewall that acts as both a firewall/switch/router(Yes this is not the best). I found a fantastic post about how to route WOL through the fortigate.\nIt did not all apply to me but it had the part I was missing, static ARP entries. When the nodes went down I was broadcasting traffic to a MAC/IP that the firewall did not have. I entered static ARP entries in the firewall for the two proxmox nodes and after that it worked like a charm. I am pretty loose with my policy between the nodes so WOL was already allowed. I don\u0026rsquo;t like however running into situations where I don\u0026rsquo;t know what a host is on my network so I wanted something to remind me to put in DNS records for new hosts.\nWhat Does Your Script Do? # Scans a hardcoded list of networks Resolves DNS on all of them Get the MAC Address Check if it is in a whitelist of no alert MACs Check if we already found these exact hosts Send the results to Discord How does it do all this? # Scan a hardcoded list of networks\nI am using the python-nmap module. I originally was going to just write this script in bash but found the python-nmap module easier to work with. I run an nmap -sn on each subnet. You are able to run this without needing root as long as you allow http on your network. You can run it with ICMP but you do need root.\nResolve DNS on all of them\ndns.resolver python library is really cool. It is the new python 3.9 way of doing DNS resolutions. Originally I was crafting reverse DNS queries myself by reversing the octets and adding a PTR to the end. However they gave me deprecation warnings about this and I found you can do it in one line\nresolver.resolve(dns.reversename.from_address(host), 'PTR')\nGet the MAC Address\ngetmac is a python library that again does not need you to run as root. I only query MAC addresses when the host does not have a dns record to speed this up. I am pretty sure this is just using ARP since there is really no other way and I remember seeing it could not figure out the MAC of my host considering I don\u0026rsquo;t have an ARP cache for myself\nCheck if it is in a whitelist of no alert MACs\nI have some hosts on IOT networks which I don\u0026rsquo;t care about in DNS. Or maybe temporary hosts that only need access for a few day. No reason to have these in DNS in my opinon but I do hate alerts about unecessary things. So I created a txt file that I just read in and check if the MAC was already whitelisted.\nCheck if we already found these exact hosts\nIn order to not abuse Discord webhook I want to make sure I am not alerting for things I already know about. If 10.0.0.1 does not have a DNS and I already alerted on it today I probably don\u0026rsquo;t care. So I again have another local txt file that I check if anything is in there. If there is nothing I clobber it with what I have currently unfound. If there is something in there check if it is an exact match and if its not clobber it ad send to Discord. I rotate(just by time and cron) this file everyday at 12AM so I will get new alerts at least once a day for outstanding items. I had an interesting idea to leverage the API to create backups of my Bitwarden credentials. However there are no actual documented API commands to do this and every way via the GUI requires you provide the master password. But I was able to find a way.\nHow? # When you login via the API the first thing your client does is do a get request for /api/sync. This returns back all of your encrypted credentials and everything you would pretty much need. The thought is that everything is done on the client side so that the server does not ever get your master password. So you are given back JSON of encrypted passwords and you did not need to provide the master password to get this.\nMy first attempts to decrypt this was to format similar to how bitwarden already exports its encrypted password files.\nThis did not succeed however because the key that you are given when you export your credentials contains your master password somewhere within. When bitwarden gets it back it is able to decrypt it.\nI am unauthenticated so I do not have that key just two keys that are used by the client to decrypt the data.\nSo at this point I know that the clients get this data back and somehow they are able to decrypt this into password. Bitwarden is open source so it should not be that hard to find. Well after looking myself and reading blogs from some smarter people this is harder than I thought.\nSomeone has probably done something similar # I happened upon a script called BitwardenDecrypt from Gurpreet. After reading the script it looked very similar into what I wanted to do. So instead of editing Gurpreet\u0026rsquo;s code to do what I wanted I figured I would edit my script to have output parsable to his. BitwardenDecrypt was written around the same exact principle. When you login to bitwarden via the Desktop app you are given the same data back but in a different format. This file is saved to data.json. Luckliy I had one of these from my previous tests. I was able to take the format needed and create a json file that was structured for that. After that all you have to do is run BitwardenDecrypt and with your master password your data is decrypted.\nThis works great actually and is everything I wanted. No actual authentication needed to Bitwarden and I have a backup of my passwords incase my self hosted instance goes down. The way BitwardenDecrypt formats the data back into a JSON you can even take the output save it to json and restore your password in the bitwarden gui like you would with a regular unencrypted backup.\nI currently have my script setup as a daily cron job to pull encrypted backups from Bitwarden. I already self host a Bitwarden instance and searches online show that even self hosted instances can use the Bitwarden API.\nBitwarden actually has two different APIs that I found. The Organization API which is geared more to managing access to collections and passwords. From what I found you cannot use the organization API to retrieve any credentials. For this you need the Vault API which lets you pull down all your credentials decrypted.\nAccessing the Bitwarden Vault API # The Bitwarden Vault API documentation points you to using the Bitwarden CLI to access the API. This is a CLI binary that you point at your Bitwarden instance and can then retrieve your credentials. It is very easy to install.\nRunning bw config server https://bitwarden for me sent the bitwarden CLI to my local bitwarden instance. However I use a reverse proxy to handle all my TLS certs so I do not have to apply them everywhere. However the Bitwarden CLI is written in NodeJS and a self signed cert will throw errors. I attempted to point node to the cert using the environment variable NODE_EXTRA_CA_CERTS=/path/to/cert.pem but for some strange permissions error I could never get it to load. You can bypass cert inspection but just using the environment variable of NODE_TLS_REJECT_UNAUTHORIZED='0' I ended up doing this because I just wanted to explore the Bitwarden CLI to see if it could provide me with what I needed. I would not recommend this as bitwarden does have information on how to easily install a lets encrypt cert.\nIs the Bitwarden API What I am looking for? # TLDR: No. I am looking for an API that I could just provide an API Key to and pull a credential.\nThere are multiple ways to login to Bitwarden via the cli.\nOption 1: Provide Email and Master Password\nOption 2: API ID and Secret along with Master Password(?)\nOption 3: SSO\nI don\u0026rsquo;t have SSO setup in my homelab but I am pretty sure you still need to provide the master password to unlock you vault.\nMy Bitwarden Collection contains all of my credentials since I use it for personal use. So needing to submit a master password is a no go for me. This was my biggest gripe with the API Key setup.\nBitwarden offers you an API Client ID and Secret but these are used almost exactly as your email would if you went with option 1. In order to decrypt secrets you need to present your master key.\nWhen I was originally testing the Bitwarden CLI I had authenticated with my Email and Master password. You are then given a session that basically keeps you authenticated. I went and tried the API Client authentication next and still had the session open. This confused me as I thought using the API Client ID and Secret you would be able to access your credentials in the Vault. This is incorrect, but I thought I could.\nI wanted to know how the API Client ID and Secret were able to do this so I setup mitmproxy and exported environmental variables in my terminal to get a look at how bitwarden was making the authentication request.\nHere is the total authentication flow using the API Client ID and Secret\nLets step into the Post Requests\nHere we send a post to bitwarden with a payload containing the API Client ID and Client secret. We tell bitwarden we want to use the API. This looks similar to what the email authentication looks like except there they just send the email.\nWe then get back\nThis is the response to the post request. You can see we are given back what I believe is the kdf algorithm you are using along with the kdf iterations. The recommended iterations vary for which algorithm you use. Interestingly enough there was a bug in Bitwarden that forced iterations lower than 5,000 or above 2,000,000 before.\nI am unsure what the two Keys are for that you get back, I assume these are for decrypting the encrypted credentials that you get back. Lastly you get back an access token to just provide when you submit further requests.\nThe next post request is a duplicated. I cannot figure out why that happens but it does\u0026hellip;\nWe can take a look at the sync get request\nHere you get a response of what appears to be all of your credentials. They are all encrypted so you cannot actually derive anything from them without using your master password to decrypt them. The IDs are not encrypted here but you cannot tell what credential they map to without decrypting the name. This is important because you can pull a credential using an ID via the API.\nAt this point you are \u0026ldquo;logged in\u0026rdquo; and Bitwarden will tell you.\nBut they will tell you in order to unlock(decrypt really) your vault you need to provide you master password.\nAt this point that all became useless to me as I would still have to provide the master password either way to decrypt the keys. Meaning I would always have to store that password somewhere. So why not just store the password I would need in code within a safe file that my script can read.\nWhen I started this I thought there was a way to read credentials just with the API Client ID and Secret but they just replace the username. This seems strange and I would love a way to have an API Token that would grant me access. Even some sort of 1 week validation on the token would be great so we don\u0026rsquo;t have to rotate them manually if they are exposed.\nIt seems like other people have run into this same issue and it seems like this may have been the intention with Bitwarden.\nFinal Thoughts # Right now I think I will continue using files that contain my credentials sadly until I find a better way to get my credntials into code. Hopefully Bitwarden creates something like this in the future.\nThere are already python libraries which will let you interact with the Bitwarden CLI given you provide the master password.https://pypi.org/project/ta-bitwarden-cli/#description\nHowever I was looking for a solution without using the master password.\nI could have wrote a similar module with popen interacting with the Bitwarden CLI but this would not have helped me.\nThe only other option I saw for this was to create a user and add them to my Bitwarden organization and share a single credential I am using with them. This way I could hardcode a master credential somewhere and just expose one password to that account limiting the attack surface. Given the attack would need to first have someone on my network just for them to use those credentials to only have access to a handful of selected passwords this is Ok. But the more I thought about it this is really similar to just hardcoding the password I need somewhere in a file. The only advantage you get is dynamically selecting password to give that user access to.\nAn interesting thing I found with Bitwarden CLI is they will let you setup a rest api server via the CLI. Then you can submit requests via the API. They make it seem like without this you won\u0026rsquo;t have access to the API. I got this setup but I found that I would need to first be running it on my Bitwarden server and then start up the Bitwarden CLI and authenticate to it which would again require a hardcode of my master password.\nI never tried authenticating the CLI and then using the rest API in a hopefully authenticated manner but this would allow almost everyone on that network credentialed api access which does not sound good.\nBut the interesting thing I found was that self hosted Bitwarden already responds to API requests like you saw in the mitmproxy flow. Doing some searching I came upon Ghost.\nAfter reading the Ghost installation docs it seemed easier than Wordpress installs so I started setting it up.\nI spun up a VM in my DMZ and followed the installation guide which is very easy to follow. Uninstall is easy and they give you a binary(ghost) which you are able to change configs and restart the service with.\nThe only part of the installation that was troublesome was the blog url and the SQL DB. I ended up going with my root domain rather than a subdomain for the blog. The SQL section seemed to indicate to just use root for the install. I setup SQL with a specific user and gave it full permissions for its DB. They don\u0026rsquo;t list specific permissions you need to allow the SQL user but I did not dial back any permissions to test. Its mostly a compromise on the easy install that you are not clued into a lot of the details. I am ok with this compromise currently.\nI setup NGINX without SSL because I was planning to use Cloudflare tunnels to connect back to the site. I ran into a bit of trouble with this as some of my images were loading in via http and some were load via https which were getting blocked via a mixed-content block. This caused some issues and forced me to use https as my URL in ghost config. I was able to leave Always Https and Automatic HTTP Rewrites in Cloudflare and this all seems to play nice so far.\nI made some fun Nginx configs for Ghost\nlocation ^~/ghost { allow 10.0.0.0/24; deny all; proxy_set_header X-Forwarded-For $proxy_add_x_forwarded_for; proxy_set_header X-Forwarded-Proto $scheme; proxy_set_header X-Real-IP $remote_addr; proxy_set_header Host $http_host; proxy_pass http://127.0.0.1:2368; } This block here is to deny everyone but my local subnet to /ghost. This path is like wp-admin for Wordpress. Nginx regexs actually take precedence over others so when this URL path is determined it overrides other permits. You can also deny this in WAF settings but I went the nginx way since they don\u0026rsquo;t have an option to just tarpit a user which I would have liked. Anything else gives someone an indication a page is there.Then just ontop of the config above I added\nerror_page 403 404 /404.html; location = /404.html { internal; #return 404 } This returns a 404 for any 403 error pages. 403 will let someone know that they are forbidden and there is something there. But the 404 does not indicate something exists. I know by telling you I am doing this and showing that /ghost exists its not helping me but its an easy way to add an extra annoyance Cloudflare Tunnels\nCloudflare Tunnels are the main reason I wanted to do this in general. The main benefit I see people talk about with Cloudflare Tunnels are they let you get from the Internet to your infrastructure even with CGNAT. Basically you run an agent on a system in your local network and you are able to expose anything to the Internet. No port forwarding/VIPs or inbound firewall rules from the internet needed. You are also protected by Cloudflares services and no one sees your public IP. And lastly you do not have to mess with setting up a certificate or SSL settings as you are reverse proxied via Cloudflare.\nThis is the main benefit for me, having Cloudflare as a CDN and not needed inbound firewall access is a huge win for me. And also not having to setup a certificate on my side takes out even more hassle. Plus it is all free.\nThe only downside to this is trusting Cloudflare. They basically have access into your local network. I think the benefits outweigh the costs. Cloudflare is reputable and I am also keeping non essential data within a DMZ running the tunnel that has no access back into my internal environment so I mitigate a lot of the risk.\nThey do not say specifically how Cloudflare gets the data but I assume its just a tunnel that is open between the two hosts and Cloudflare just sends a request for data over that existing tunnel session. In this article they explain a bit more on how they improved tunnel lifetime to make this work even better\nhttps://blog.cloudflare.com/argo-tunnels-that-live-forever/\nThe Cloudflare guide on setting up the tunnel makes it super simple. I spun up an Ubuntu container via Proxmox in my DMZ VLAN and was able to run a few commands to get it up and running. After that you can set your tunnel to run as a service so that it comes up on reboots. As long as that agent has connectivity to the endpoint you want to host you are set.\nOne thing I did uniquely was that I am not using my root domain for anything so I used it for the blog. Cloudflare tunnels basically work off CNAMEs pointing you CNAME you create for the tunnel to Cloudflare. Cloudflare has another feature called CNAME Flattening.\nThe DNS RFC(1034) states that CNAMEs must be alone in DNS and also that your root domain must have an SOA and NS record. These two contradict each other an make it so that you should not have a CNAME as your root domain. You can put a CNAME as your root domain but, some of the time doing this you can run into errors because you are violating the RFC and not all applications are programmed to handle this.\nCloudflare created a way to have RFC complaint CNAMEs for your root domain. As long as Cloudflare is the authoritative DNS server for your domain this will work. When they get a request for the root record they become a DNS resolver and just recurse the CNAME to get an A record. They then just return that A record and make your DNS record look completely normal from the outside. As a side beneift of having Cloudflare do the CNAME chain resolution is that they cache responses and decrease the time for resolution. It also can obscure the fact that you are using Cloudflare since you are getting back a normal IP and not having a CNAME.
